South Lyon has a population of over 11,000, located south of I-96 and west of US-23, and is part of the larger South Lyon-Howell-Brighton Urban Area. The South Lyon Community School System is composed of two high schools (South Lyon High School and South Lyon East High School), two middle schools, and seven elementary schools. What began as a one-room log schoolhouse built just outside of town now serves all surrounding communities, including parts of Washtenaw and Livingston counties.

South Lyon was founded in 1832, incorporated as a village in 1873 and later as a city in 1930. It was named after Lucius Lyon, a member of the Michigan State Legislature. Three major railroad lines once passed through town. The former Grand Trunk Railroad line was paved over and now serves the community as the Huron Valley Rail Trail, a public trail for walking and biking that is connected to nearby Kensington Metropark.

South Lyon is also close to several lakes that offer great fishing like Silver Lake or Nichwagh Lake. A weekly farmers market brings the city together with local growers. The whole town turns out for summer concerts in the gazebo and festivals like Depot Day and Pumpkinfest.

Lansing, the capital of Michigan is located less than an hour drive west, and Detroit is just 45 miles to the east.
