South Lyon Michigan Homes and Community

South Lyon has a population of over 11,000, located south of I-96 and west of US-23, and is part of the larger South Lyon-Howell-Brighton Urban Area. The city offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, business, and an extensive school system that covers 88 square miles. The South Lyon Community School System is composed of two high schools (South Lyon High School and South Lyon East High School), two middle schools, and seven elementary schools. What began as a one-room log schoolhouse built just outside of town now serves all surrounding communities, including parts of Washtenaw and Livingston counties.

South Lyon was founded in 1832, incorporated as a village in 1873 and later as a city in 1930. It was named after Lucius Lyon, member of the Michigan State Legislature. Three major railroad lines once passed through town. The former Grand Trunk Railroad line was paved over and now serves the community as the Huron Valley Rail Trail, a public trail for walking and biking that is connected to nearby Kensington Metropark.

With numerous annual festivals and activities, there is always something to do in South Lyon. McHattie Park, home to the Witch's Hat Depot and Museum Village, hosts plenty of public events such as Depot Days in the fall and Concerts in the Park during the summer. Pumpkinfest is the largest annual festival in South Lyon and takes place during the first weekend of October. This grand event features plenty of children's activities, games, carnival fare, a parade through downtown, concerts, exhibits and live entertainment. The South Lyon Farmers & Artisans Market welcomes vendors and farmers to sell produce and wares every Saturday from May through October. The Lake Street Cruise-In features a classic car show and live entertainment downtown from May through September. South Lyon combines small hometown living, historic downtown, and plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment with the proximity of the major metropolitan areas of Ann Arbor, Lansing and Detroit within an hour's drive.
